Powers of Ten

We prefer to look at our fellow human beings through a telescope or a microscope, rather than converse face-to-face.

From very close up and from very far away, in the abstraction of statistics, in the remnants of prehistory, busied in determinate tasks or spending sums of money — human beings are silent.

We observe, and nobody’s there to interrupt our explanatory monologue.

We are protected from involvement.
